We’re excited to spotlight our next Senior SLC member, Emery Schultz. Emery has been such a genuine and positive part of our community, and it’s been really special to watch their growth over the years. We’re so proud of all they’ve given to the league and grateful to have them as part of it.
What was your first impression when you started in the league? How did you feel about biking at that time?
Honestly, when I first joined the league. I was nervous. I’d spent the last year or so biking with my dad locally, but it felt pretty weird joining a team, especially after covid. Luckily, I met some older riders who really helped me get acquainted with the team environment, and it’s been great since then.
How have you seen your biking skills improve over time? Can you share specific examples of your progress?
My skills haven’t improved in a very linear manner. I’m not a terribly competitive rider, so I rarely practice during the off season. However, last year I actually made an effort and improved my placement significantly. When I went to bike parks more often, I got pretty decent at jumps. This season, I’m chilling since I’m pretty busy anyway. Whenever I made a concerted effort to improve a skill, it improved. Go figure.
In what ways have you noticed an increase in confidence, both on and off the bike, since joining the league?
My involvement in the league has given me a lot in terms of confidence, not necessarily just in riding skills. Being a junior coach for the past few years has been pretty helpful for that since I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of people to help teach skills and integrate people into the team.
How have you handled challenges or setbacks, such as difficult trials or races? What lessons have you learned from these experiences?
Every race presents different challenges. I think 2 of my most memorable (and frustrating) moments have happened in Winthrop. One race, someone crashed into me while a large group was going uphill. I got knocked down and promptly run over by 2 other riders, which was irritating but looking back is pretty funny. Another time during a particularly dusty race, I turned a bit fast around a corner and crashed. In a few seconds, I was back up and finished the race with decent placing. Important lesson here: don’t get run over, and make sure to recover fast from mistakes.
How has the SLC impacted you?
The SLC has been really helpful, as the leadership position has been a really cool experience to discuss my thoughts and benefit the league. It’s been interesting having a say in our policies, planning events, and resolving any issues that we’ve encountered in performing our general functions.
What is your favorite part of being on the SLC?
I think my favorite part is collaborating to solve issues and come up with ideas. When we’re productive, we can make a lot of headway on our plans. I especially enjoy planning for events (BIKE PROM!!!) since it’s a creative process to come up with ideas and find ways to execute them.
What have you grown from being a part of the SLC?
I think the most important things I’ve gained from my years within the SLC are stronger collaborative and leadership skills. Working with the other SLC members has meant seeking solutions to issues, even when we don’t agree. These skills are valuable not only in the SLC but throughout numerous other parts of life.
What are your next steps after you graduate from high school?
I plan to attend a 4-year college for chemical engineering. Currently I’m most likely going to attend UW, but I’m still looking over some details. Ideally I can complete my bachelors in under 4 years and pursue a grad program afterwards.
