Race 2 Wrap-Up
RACE REPORT BY ZANE KASPER, 8th Grade

I raced in the middle school boys’ category in the 2nd race of the Washington Student League for the Northshore Gnarwhals. I had a lot of fun racing, and the course was awesome. The start in the rough grass was a very challenging place to sprint, but once I got to the singletrack, the course was great. My favorite part of the course was getting gnarly in the fast and flowy section with berms, rollers, and jumps.

After the race, one of the parents made hotdogs, and after a really hard race, those hotdogs were the best I’d ever had. Talking with my team about our own races and thoughts on the course was also fun. Even though I didn’t finish close to 1st place, racing for me was, while difficult, still a very exciting and rewarding experience.

Race Day Tips

By Meg Shepherd, 9th Grade

1st Year Washington Student League Rider

A letter to myself on race day:

Congratulations! You've made it to race day and sustained minimal physical and mental injuries. I need hardly tell you to get excited, because you've been blasting AC/DC all morning and packing down energy bars for the past twenty minutes.

But I do have some reminders for you.

  • First things first, don't let the excitement of the race distract you from the other important things going on today. Look people around you in the eye and make conversation. The community is just as important as the sport. (Plus you're not much of the tall, brooding, and mysterious type, so you might as well be friendly.)
  • Second, remember to relax. You've done all the preparation you can do. There isn't one more day to get a quick ride in, what you have is what you're rolling with. And you know what? It's pretty good! Just breathe.
  • Put your game face on. No! Oh my goodness not that one! You want to mildly intimidate them, not make them go home crying.. That's better. Okay yes one more energy gel.
  • But wait one last thing! Remember to give it your all. There's no saving up for later. Today is your rainy day and the mud splatters will look awesome later.

Beacon Bike Park, Seattle

Join the work party on May 10, 2014

On January 9, 2014, the Seattle Parks Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of a mountain bike pilot project in Cheasty Greenspace, aka Beacon Bike Park.  The Seattle Parks staff will be managing much of the process for building the park.  However, they are looking to volunteers (all of us) to restore the 34 acres of forest and build the trails.

LET'S GET THE WSL COMMUNITY OUT IN FORCE! LET'S SHOW THEM THAT WE ARE STEWARDS OF THE TRAILS!!
